Penelo massaged her temples for a moment. She could hardly focus on the beautiful beach with a throbbing headache. She laid back on the towel that rested on the warm sand and covered her eyes with her forearm. Vaan had run off, leaving her here to watch over all their possessions because he had seen a mark he was adamant on beating on his own. Penelo let out another sigh and just listened to the water lap against the beach. It was soothing and before too long, she had fallen asleep by its lullaby.
She woke up with a start, her eyes jerked around her surroundings as she momentarily forgot where she was. It was dusk, the sun had already dropped below the horizon and light was sparse. She glanced around, her eyes still crusted from sleep, and realized Vaan hadn't returned yet. Her brow furrowed in frustration. He had promised!
She crouched up from the blanket and hastily gathered all her things into her carrying bag and hoisted it over her shoulder. She rolled up the blanket and set it next to the rest of their bags. She maneuvered some rocks to hide their stuff and she observed the hiding place for a moment before she decided everything was sufficiently hidden from sight. She kicked her feet across the sand to hide her prints as she moved back towards the trail that led inland.
She heard the faint movement of a wild beast so she knocked an arrow onto her long bow and drew to half power and walked slowly forward, coming around the bend in the rocks her eyes came to rest on a wolf. It's eyes glowed even at night and it howled out in pain when the arrow pierced through its ears. Penelo lunged forward to retrieve her arrow from the dead beast. She pulled it by its paws off the main trail and then returned to walking along the foot path, her bow back at half drawn as she walked. In front of her, she faintly saw the outline of a person, or at least it was the average height, but she still couldn't be sure. She silently padded forward a few paces until she was three meters behind the figure. "Hello? Vaan?" She asked softly, so she didn't startle the person.

Ash sat in a tree with his leg over the edge a book in his hands. He didn't like to read but it was kinda dull so he decided to plop himself down and do something. The book was a sudoku book. He stared at it and had been for awhile now. "To heck with this." He said and put it away and jumped down.
He streatched his arms and legs and looked into the sky. "Dusk? I better find a place to go." He said and to himself and adjusted his pack. He walked down a trail. He stopped when he heard someone. "Hello? Vaan? He looked back. "No i'm Ash. Hey i remember you."

The first thing she felt was dissappointment, for as the person turned around and spoke, it was obvious it wasn't Vaan. That worried her, because he said he would be back. He had promised, actually. Dammit, Vaan. Now I have to look for you, and if I find you hurt I swear to god, I am going to buy a house and lock you inside it. She mini ranted to herself before the words of what the guy said really even sank in. "No, I'm Ash. Hey, I remember you." His words made her narrow her eyes at him.
Sure...he looked familiar kinda like a face in a dream, but she was sure she had never seen the guy before. The only people she knew with black hair like his was Larsa, his dead older brother Vayne, and the Grand Marquis of Rozarria, Al Cid. She lowered her weapong further, the bow unstrung and the arrow useless between her fingers. "I am sorry, you have me confused as someone else. I'm quite sure I have never met you before." She trailed off, glancing around them, when her eyes landed back on the boy. He didn't seem to have a weapon with him. She glanced back over her shoulder, on the top of the hill she saw a Garuda heading towards them. She lifted the bow again and drew the arrow back.
"You had better come with me, unless of course you want to get picked at by that beasty over there." She tilted her head backwards towards the ocean. Sure, there were still monsters and beasts there, but only the wolves which were completely managable. "Oh, and I'm Penelo." She tacked on as an afterthought as she led him back through the pass.

Ash smiled. "Nice to meet ya penelo." He said and looked at the beast. "I guess we should go." He said and backed up with her. "SO excatly what is that thing called and why would it want to fight us?[/color]" He said and watched it. He had seen alot of heartless and nobodies but no creatures from other worlds. He would like to fight it and test its power but he did want to risk it attacking her to.

Penelo nodded faintly at the 'nice to meet ya'. Yes, he did seem like a cool an interesting person, but their meeting was tainted with her annoyance at Vaan. Where was he? It was always a question in her mind and she hated it. She would be gray by the end of next year if this cycle continues.
She led him through the pass and straight to the rocks that hide the rest of her and Vaan's things. It was still perfectly hidden so she just sat down in front of the rocks and took the bag and quiver off her shoulder. "That was a flyer. A Garuda, if I am not mistaken. Those things, and the rest of the beasts around here just don't like humes, or anything else with higher thought. Bangaa's get the beating almost as much as we do. Anyway, the rest of Ivalice is like that--save the cities...But..." She started to look a little confused as the thought kicked. How could he not know that? Everyone knew about the wild animal problem of the wilderness. Kids were told how dangerous it was to go outside the protection a city everyday. Guards were always posted, sentries manned the walls. Yet he knew none of it? It just didn't make any sense to her.
She glanced around and sighed. The darkness had pretty much set in, which meant they should build a fire to stay warm because the seabreeze was due to drop a few degrees and it would more than a little miserable. Penelo stood and dusted the sand off the back of her legs and glanced around. "Help me look for some fire wood and we'll continue the conversation."

"Alrighty then." He said and walked over to a tree. He stared at it and rubbed his chin. He got into his fighting position and punched it. The tree stood still and didn't move. Ash moved his hand back and shoke it. He kept his back to it and waited. The tree started to fall and ash smiled. "Got the firewood." He said happily. he pulled it down the beach and started braking branches off.

Penelo, oblivious to what the man was doing, walked north along the beach, near the rocks she picked up random pieces of drift wood, and sticks that were dry. It was a good thing it hadn't rained in the last few days, or they probably wouldn't have been able to make a fire in the first place. She was going to continue going forward, but she saw a few wolves milling around farther up the beach.
She kept her eyes on them as she backed up, one hand was outstretch to touch the rockface, while the other held all the wood she had collected. She slowly backed up farther and watched as the two wolves started to play fight. She took this as her exit, she turned and sprinted silently through the sand with her spoils in her arms.
She arrived back at their camp to see Ash ripping a part an entire tree. She regarded him from the shadows, again trying to figure out why he thought he knew her, and why he seemed a bit familiar. But she couldn't come up with anything. Maybe in the firelight she will remember. She stepped up to him and chuckled faintly. "There really wasn't the need to take down an entire tree, yaknow. I mean we aren't going to need all of it, and it's not like we are staying here after the morning anyway. Unless of course you are. Just--I'm not...whatever." She shook her head at her rambling and dumped her load of wood and set to arranging the fire, putting rocks around it to prevent it spreading--even though they are on the beach. She sat back on her heels and then glanced at him, "So what brings you to Phon Coast?"

Ash grunted as he pulled branches off. "You never know when you'll need alot of wood." He smiled and looked at her. "I'm abit of wanderer. I go from planet to planet and fight baddies." He said and sat down in the sand and put his pack next to him. "I mainly do it because i have nowhere else to go." He said and looked at her.
